BUYER & SELLER FAQs
What can I buy and sell on The Stock Yard?
You can buy/sell any kind of cattle, from registered, non registered, purebread, to cross-breed, we welcome them all! We will NOT promote "mini" cattle or "bottle babies" unless there was a medical reason for them to be so.
What is the fee to sell through The Stock Yard?
The seller fee, or your listing fee, goes to The Stock Yard to help us continue to provide a place for people to safely and easily buy and sell their cattle. There is no upfront fee to make your listing. If it doesn't sell, you don't owe anything. When an item (animal, embryo, semen etc) sells we will collect our 6% fee at the conclusion of the auction. This is 25% less than the next leading cattle auction. We believe in helping people, and keeping farmers money in their pockets. That percentage gets even better when you begin using our loyalty program!
What is the Loyalty Program?
Our mission is to help farmers sell their animals easier, to a bigger audience, while also helping them maximize the profit for their hard earned work. Being farmers ourselves we understand the time, labor and devotion that goes into it. All other auction houses or online sales charge to help you sell your animals. We do it for way less. And also as a thank you for choosing to list with us, every 5th animal that is SOLD through us, we will cut the auction commission by an additional 2% for that single sale. That makes it HALF of what you would pay anyone else to list your animal. That is our Loyalty Program. Stick with us, and we will stick with you!
Does my animal have to be registered?
No, it does not, but if it isn't, that needs to be specified in the listing. If the animal you are listing is registered, please specify where they are registered, provide any registration numbers or proof that seems applicable.
How long after the sale am I responsible for the animal(s)?
You are solely responsible for the animal until you have received full payment from your buyer. At that time, they assume full responsibility of the animal.
How do I pay for my purchase?
A credit card on file is required to bid. This will only be charged for the auction fee (6% of total sale) once the auction has ended, if you win. The remainder of the balance will be paid directly to the seller by the buyer, in whatever way they agree upon whether it's cash, check, wire etc.
Can I sell a bred cow?
Yes you may. However that is only allowed after a licensed veterinarian has confirmed pregnancy, otherwise the animal will be considered open. In the event of a misdiagnosis, if the animal is purchased while believed to be bred, and turns out not to be, the buyer will be entitled to a full refund unless prices are renegotiated between buyer and seller.
What if my "bred" cow turns out to be Open?
If you sold a female under the description of being bred, and she turns out open, buyer has full right to be refunded in full by the seller, unless buyer and seller negotiate a new price for the open female. Buyer must have this info proven by a vet within 10 days of picking up the animal from the seller.
Do I need a Vet check for animals I'm selling?
A health certificate is required for all animals being sold out of state. We would also recommend doing one for local sales as well, just to provide proof of good health for all parties involved.
Who is responsible for transferring registrations? (where applicable)
The transfer and/or transfer fee is the responsibility of the seller, and to be completed within 7 business days of the animal or item leaving your farm unless agreed upon in writing between the buyer and seller
What is a proxy bid?
A proxy bid is a tool available to you, if you would like to set a bid limit, and have the auction essentially bid for you without going above your desired amount. This is handy if there is an animal/item you really want to purchase, but will not have time to actively bid on them.
When do I get paid after my sale?
After your sale is concluded, The Stock Yard will take its 6%* deposit automatically. The seller and buyer will then determine when and how final 94% will be paid, (check, cash, wire etc..) between themselves. Balance must be paid in full within 10 days of sale concluding, unless agreed upon in writing by both buyer and seller. If arrangements are made for seller to house animal longer than 10 days, the seller has right to ask for a feeding and housing fee, which is to be paid directly to seller, by buyer. Housing fee not to exceed 20$/Day per animal.
I bid by mistake, can I withdraw a bid?
No. We encourage all potential buyers to be responsible when bidding. Once a bid is placed, it cannot be taken back. The same rules apply when a proxy bid is placed.
What do I do now that my sale ended?
